The primary method used in an organization development initiative. Data on the nature of certain problems or issues are systematically collected, analyzed, and then action is taken as a function of what the data indicate. Change Change is any shift in the 'status quo.' It implies movement towards a goal, or a desired state or vision. It can also mean a shift in beliefs or attitudes in an organization. Change Agent A change agent is a person whose role it is to implement a change. Change agents may be inside an organization or come from an outside source and they play a key role in sustaining the momentum and direction of a change effort. A coach is a person whose role it is to bring about change for an individual to improve effectiveness with people, performance in a role or achieve a goal. “Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.” Culture Beliefs, behaviors and assumptions that are shared by the members of an organization, that operate unconsciously and that define in a basic “taken-for-granted” fashion an organization's view of itself and its environment. These beliefs, behaviors and assumptions are learned responses to a group's problems. They come to be taken for granted because they solve those problems repeatedly and reliably. Source: Schein, E. (1985). Organizational Culture and leadership. San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass. Diagnosis The process of interviewing, observing or assessing (using an instrument) individuals, groups or entire organizations, then analyzing and organizing the data collected for action. In the nomenclature of OD, an intervention is a change effort or change process. It implies the intentional work of a consultant with a client for the purpose of initiating or implementing change. OD Organization development, the process of introducing planned change in an organization. 'Organization development is a process of fundamental change in an organization's culture.' Warner Burke (1994) Reading, MA: Addison-Wesley Publishing Company Sponsor One who underwrites, legitimizes, and champions a change effort. One who has an interest in an OD intervention. Stakeholders often include customers, suppliers, distributors, employees and government regulators. Subculture A subculture is a part of an organization's culture that differs slightly from the widely held beliefs, behaviors and assumptions of the organization. Subcultures often develop within departments or business units that operate independently of the overall business. Source: Coaching for Performance: A practical guide to growing your own skills.
